Marissa Della-Giustina

Marissa Della-Giustina

Candidate for Chair and South Regional Representative

Medical School: West Virginia University School of Medicine

Nominated/Endorsed by: Self nomination

Candidate Statement

I am running for the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council to actively advocate for medical students passionate about emergency medicine. As the current Wellness Chair of AAEM/RSA, I’ve implemented initiatives to promote EM residents’ well-being, focusing on sustainability and support in this demanding field. This has included helping plan the Resident Fuel Competition and organizing the Wellness Room at the Scientific Assembly this April.

My journey into emergency medicine began before medical school, working as an Emergency Department Technical Associate at a Level 1 trauma center for two years. I loved the fast-paced, patient-centered nature of EM and felt deeply connected to the specialty. In medical school, I’ve served as MS1 Liaison and now President of our Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG). My goal has been to create diverse, hands-on experiences that inspire students and prepare them for their future roles as physicians. I’ve done this through several meetings, workshops, and other events. Participation in EMIG has more than doubled this past year due to the new variety in opportunities offered to students.

My proudest accomplishment has been organizing an EM Round Table event to bridge the gap between students and mentors. Noticing the need for one-on-one connections, I worked with our faculty advisor to create a space where students could interact directly with ED physicians and fellowship-trained specialists. Unlike traditional panels, this format allowed students to choose who they spoke with, ask candid questions, and build meaningful relationships. Participants included specialists in ultrasound, EMS, pediatrics, sports medicine, medical education, rural EM, and current EM residents.

This experience reflects my dedication to collaboration, mentorship, and fostering opportunities for others —values that align with AAEM/RSA’s mission. Through the Medical Student Council, I hope to expand these efforts nationally, empowering medical students to feel supported and inspired as they pursue emergency medicine.

Jake Moore

Jake Moore

Candidate for Chair

Medical School: Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Louisiana Campus

Nominated/Endorsed by: Jake Graff, MSC Chair

Nomination Statement

Jake Moore has been involved on our MSC for 1 year and has taken ownership of the Southern region. However, he has long been involved in advocacy for students and medicine in general. He has my full support in running for the medical student chair position. He is an engaged leader who will fill this role excellently. Jake is kind, genuine and truly wants to provide the best opportunities to students within AAEM/RSA and within the country. During his time on the MSC thus far he has been productive in ensuring the Southern symposium is available to all students interested in training in the South. Jake has my full vote of confidence as he seeks this position. The medical student council will be under great leadership with him as chair.

Candidate Statement

As an EM bound medical student, my involvement with AAEM and AAEM/RSA over the past two years has been transformative. Through advocacy opportunities, Student Symposia, and the AAEM Scientific Assembly, these organizations have deepened my resolve to train as an emergency medicine physician while connecting me with invaluable mentors, resources and knowledge. I hope to serve as Chair of the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council so I can help provide those same opportunities to EM bound students nationwide.

Our MSC’s most tangible benefits to students are the Regional Symposia and the Student. Track at the AAEM Scientific Assembly. As Regional Representative for the South this past year, I have gained first-hand knowledge of the efforts and coordination required to organize these events. If elected as Chair, my first tactical goal would be to support the MSC in planning Symposia to serve students nationwide. Further, I hope to help arrange advocacy webinars and direct outreach to EMIGs to share AAEM/RSA’s mission.

We are entering a pivotal time for emergency medicine, and uncertainty abounds among trainees. With the transition to ResidencyCAS, proposed residency accreditation changes, and corporate and political threats facing our specialty, AAEM/RSA’s mission is more vital than ever.

As Chair, I will work to help student’s access resources and mentorship to navigate their own professional journeys with confidence and equip them to advocate for fair training and employment practices, fight for physician-led emergency care, and challenge themselves to achieve clinical excellence.

AAEM/RSA has been instrumental in shaping my path, and I am eager to give back by leading the Medical Student Council. I am excited for the opportunity to continue working with this organization to strengthen our specialty, support our peers, and uphold the values of AAEM/RSA. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to this work.

Candidates for Vice Chair

Priscilla Babalola

Priscilla Babalola

Candidate for Vice Chair

Medical School: CUNY School of Medicine

Nominated/Endorsed by: Self nomination

Candidate Statement

Emergency Medicine is built on the principles of rapid decision-making, advocacy, and service to diverse patient populations. As a dedicated medical student and aspiring EM physician, I am committed to expanding opportunities for medical student members of AAEM/RSA and ensuring that we actively work to bridge racial and socioeconomic gaps in our field.

One of my primary goals as Vice Chair is to enhance access to mentorship, professional development, and clinical exposure for medical students – especially those from institutions without home EM programs. Many students, including myself, face challenges in navigating the path to Emergency Medicine due to limited institutional resources. I want to work on creating more structured mentorship pipelines, increased access to EM faculty, and targeted guidance on audition rotations and residency applications to ensure that every student—regardless of their background—has the tools to succeed.

Additionally, we cannot ignore the disparities that exist within our specialty. Emergency Medicine is one of the most diverse fields in medicine, yet gaps persist between racial groups in recruitment, retention, and leadership representation. As Vice Chair, I will advocate for initiatives that foster equity and inclusion, including targeted outreach, leadership development programs for underrepresented students, and increased discussions on racial health disparities within EM.

Collaboration is key to progress. I want to build stronger connections between medical students, residents, and attending physicians within AAEM/RSA so that we can work collectively toward a more inclusive, innovative, and supportive Emergency Medicine community.

I am ready to bring my passion, experience, and dedication to this role, and I hope to earn your support as Vice Chair. Let’s build a stronger, more connected future for medical students in Emergency Medicine!

Logan Garr

Logan Garr

Candidate for Vice Chair and West Regional Representative

Medical School: Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix

Nominated/Endorsed by: Self nomination

Candidate Statement

As an aspiring EM physician, I’ve developed a strong interest in organized medicine and healthcare advocacy throughout medical school. My first significant exposure to organized medicine came in March 2024, when I participated in an EM lobbying event with the Arizona state legislature, organized by our local ACEP chapter. During this event, I had the opportunity to meet with legislators and discuss the ED boarding crisis affecting our state. It was eye-opening to see how unaware many legislators were of the critical ED issues happening in their own districts. However, I was encouraged to learn that some legislators rely on trusted physicians to inform their decisions on healthcare policy. This experience served as an early inspiration for me, reinforcing the idea that EM physicians can become influential community leaders with the power to shape policy, advocate for change, and protect the well-being of those we serve.

Determined to play a more active role in healthcare advocacy, I joined the Arizona Medical Association’s medical student council, where I now serve as council representative for Creighton School of Medicine – Phoenix. I also serve on the Arizona College of Emergency Physician’s medical student council as an executive council member.

As the Vice-Chair or Western Regional Representative for AAEM/RSA medical student council, I aim to foster stronger collaboration between AAEM/RSA and medical school EMIGs, ensuring alignment in our efforts to build early advocacy experiences for students and create meaningful change in the field of EM. There are many for-profit corporations backed by private equity that seek to exploit both EM physicians and suffering patients. Because of this, it is necessary to empower the next generation of EM physicians with opportunities to become advocates for their patients, their communities, and the future of medicine itself.

Nick Hakes

Nick Hakes

Candidate for Vice Chair and South Regional Representative

Medical School: : University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine

Nominated/Endorsed by: Mel Ebeling, AAEM/RSA Director of Publications – Ex-officio Board Member

Nomination Statement

It is with great pleasure that a nominate Nicholas (Nick) Hakes for a position on the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council. Not only does Nick have an incredible amount of passion for the field of emergency medicine, but he also demonstrates a strong drive to become a thought leader and innovator in our specialty. I believe he would contribute much to the present and future of this organization!

Candidate Statements

Candidate Statement Vice Chair: Emergency medicine is fast, unpredictable, and requires thinking on your feet — basically, my everyday life. As Vice Chair, I’d bring that same energy to ensuring our student benefits actually benefit students and keeping the Medical Student Council running smoother than a dispo-ready patient with family at bedside.

My background blends emergency medicine, leadership, and business, because in addition to working shifts where patients say, “this has been happening for seven years, but today felt urgent,” I’m also earning a business degree. Why? Because EM isn’t just about saving lives — it’s about making sure our systems, policies, and resources work for us, too. That’s why a key priority of mine is advancing AAEM President Frolichstein’s commitment to educating every member on the business side of EM.

I’ve worked in both patient care and policy, because sometimes the biggest emergency is trying to get an administrator to approve a simple, commonsense change. From launching the Compassion Closet, a hospital initiative providing clothing to patients in need at discharge, to improving EMS systems in national parks, I’ve seen firsthand how small improvements can make a big difference. I’ve also spent years supporting medical students, whether through mentorship, educational resources, and my classified insider knowledge of which conferences have the best free snacks.

I believe in getting things done efficiently (mostly so I have time to do those stereotypically EM hobbies that make life insurance companies nervous) and keeping things fun (because medicine is serious enough). If you want a Vice Chair who will advocate for you, push for real student benefits, and can rapid sequence intubate both a patient and an inefficient process — vote for me. 🙂

Candidate Statement South Regional Representative: The Southern Region covers everything from massive urban trauma centers to rural hospitals where the closest specialist is Google. As your Southern Region Representative, I’ll make sure medical students across our states get the mentorship, resources, and opportunities they need — without needing more steps than a sepsis protocol.

I’ve worked in emergency medicine across a range of settings, from search and rescue in national parks to hospitals where half the patients “just want to get their blood pressure checked real quick.” I know every medical student faces different challenges, whether it’s navigating away rotations, finding the right mentor, or figuring out how to afford yet another conference. I’m here to help.

Quick thinking and adaptability are essential in emergency medicine, and I’ve honed these skills firsthand by responding to “stable” patients who suddenly aren’t or simply trying to find a functioning printer in the hospital. I’ll make sure our EM Interest Groups thrive, that every school has a strong voice, and that our region’s students are engaged in national discussions — without feeling like you’re chasing down a consultant refusing to answer your page.

A key priority of mine is advancing AAEM President Frolichstein’s commitment to educating every member on the business side of EM. Understanding the forces shaping our specialty, from contract groups to reimbursement models, is critical for our future. I’ll push for accessible, practical education so that every EM-bound student graduates empowered to advocate for themselves and their patients.

If you want a Southern Rep who will support you, keep things efficient, and foster the next generation of EM physicians through mentorship and advocacy, vote for me. I’ll advocate harder than a patient insisting they need a work note for the last six months.

Laura Minor

Laura Minor

Candidate for Vice Chair

Medical School: Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine

Nominated/Endorsed by: Jake Graff, MSC Chair

Nomination Statement

Laura has my full endorsement to serve as the next MSC Vice-Chair. Laura has served as the Western Representative for the last year and has done an exceptional job at leading and making resources available to such a large geographic area. She single handedly created a plan that allows medial students to individually interact with each Emergency Medicine residency program in the West through her Meet the Program series. She was able to adapt her symposium plan into something that will be more beneficial long term for students interested in training in this region. Laura is reliable, engaged, compassionate and dedicated to the field of Emergency Medicine and is a leader amongst her peers.

Laura is a doer and will excel in the role of Vice Chair of the medical student council. I cannot think of a better individual to fill this role and help the MSC continue to grow and improve its support for EM bound medical students.

Candidate Statement

Hi everyone! My name is Laura Minor, and I am excited to be running for Vice Chair of the Medical School Council. When I was elected as Western Regional Representative, I had the privilege of helping our current Chair, Jake Graff, host the first-ever Western Symposium in Palm Springs, which marked an exciting milestone in our regional networking efforts. Since then, I’ve focused on increasing visibility for residency programs across all states in the Western region, and I’m excited to announce the launch of our AAEM Western Residency Showcase this spring, which will feature a variety of programs throughout the region. I’m confident that this platform will be a long-lasting success for AAEM and will significantly expand student involvement in the Western region. Being on the MSC this past year as Western Regional Representative has been an invaluable learning experience, and I’m eager to bring that knowledge and enthusiasm to the Vice Chair role.

As Vice Chair, I aim to share the insights I’ve gained through my work to support all regional representatives in organizing impactful networking events. Additionally, I plan to put greater emphasis on educating our newly elected MSC members about all the benefits AAEM has to offer. This was something I wish I knew when I first joined, and I believe it will enhance the MSC board’s effectiveness and outreach. AAEM is an incredible organization, and I want to ensure that all medical students know about the vast opportunities and resources available. As your Vice Chair, I will work alongside our Chair and the entire Medical Student Council to strengthen AAEM’s presence and further connect our members across the country. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to get the opportunity to be your Vice Chair!

Candidate Statement

When I entered medical school, I had no idea what specialty I’d choose. Instead, I had a strong desire to help people, and a craving for the skills that would enable me to bring calm and competency in the chaos of an emergency. Though one specialty seems an obvious fit, it wasn’t until I found that my favorite classmates, friends, and professors were all involved with the EM community that I realized this is where I belong. All this to say, I am one of you. I have become a strong, passionate, and active member in the EM community and I’d like to represent each of you as a member of the student council.

The exceptional individuals who are members of the AAEM deserve a representative who will stand beside them and fight alongside them as we shape the specialty together. I am a strong advocate of physician-led healthcare and as a member of the Physicians for Patient Protection I’ve taken a stand against declining physician wages and autonomy in the ED. As a regional representative for the AAEM Medical Student Council, my goal will be to amplify the voices of each of you and create opportunities for improvement and growth within EM. I am committed to being a resource for students and ensuring that our collective interests are represented with passion, integrity, and dedication.

Finally, I bring to this council not just my love for EM but also love for my fellow students. I am the kind of person you’d want next to you during a long night shift, or while a patient is coding, or when the department is slow and you need a good conversation to pass the time.

If elected, I will be your persistent advocate. Thank you for your consideration.

I am honored to nominate Mohammad (Musab) Zulfiqar for the position of International Representative for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine/Resident and Student Association Medical Student Council (AAEM/RSA MSC). As a Canadian, an International Medical Graduate (IMG), and a non-traditional medical student, Musab brings a unique and invaluable perspective to this role, combining a deep passion for emergency medicine with firsthand experience overcoming the challenges of integrating into the U.S. healthcare system.

Musab’s path to emergency medicine is a testament to his interest and commitment to the field. During his early career as a physiotherapist with an interest in sports medicine, Musab became drawn to emergency medicine’s fast-paced, high-stakes environment, leading him to transition into medical school to pursue it full time.  Having personally navigated the challenges of being an IMG, Musab understands the barriers that Caribbean graduates and other international trainees encounter when entering the U.S. medical system – insight that fuels his passion for mentorship, representation, and systemic improvement.

As the International Representative, Musab would bring exceptional leadership, mentorship, and advocacy to the AAEM/RSA MSC. His vision is to create a stronger, more supportive network for IMGs, providing mentorship opportunities, educational resources, and guidance to help others succeed in emergency medicine. Beyond his medical journey, Musab’s advocacy through disability healthcare and community initiatives like Muhsen, and SMILE has empowered underrepresented groups. His ability to connect with peers globally, combined with his passion for inclusivity and professional development, makes Musab uniquely qualified to elevate the role of IMGs within emergency medicine.

With his dedication, firsthand experience, and unwavering commitment to empowering international medical graduates, Musab would be an outstanding representative for AAEM/RSA and the IMG community. I strongly support his nomination and have no doubt that Musab’s leadership and advocacy will make a lasting impact as International Representative – an investment in the future of emergency medicine.

Candidate Statement

As a Canadian, a non-traditional medical student, and an International Medical Student, I understand the challenges and concerns that international applicants have when pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine (EM). I’m excited to use this position and perspective to represent the needs and future success of international AAEM/RSA student members as International Representative!

Before career changing into medicine, I had the opportunity to work as a Physical Therapist in the world of Sports Medicine. With many unique experiences at the collegiate and elite sport level, I was privileged to work alongside medical professionals at the national as well as international stage. These experiences helped me recognize that the strength of a group of medical professionals with diverse backgrounds is a force to be reckoned with when channeled as a collective effort towards a common goal, patient care.

Whether organizing educational workshops and projects for the community, or leading and publishing research in police fitness testing efficiency, I have developed a passion to lead and serve. This insight fuels my ambition to foster mentorship, and drive systemic improvements for future IMGs. As a facilitator and advisor for organizations that support people with disabilities, I have come to develop a special sense of appreciation for the power of “a few” in an effort to make lasting change. My drive to supporting communities extends to my advocacy for IMGs, ensuring their needs and aspirations are represented.

I believe AAEM/RSA has the opportunity and duty to improve the future of Emergency Medicine. I also believe international AAEM/RSA student members will play a key role in that future. My goal as AAEM/RSA’s International Representative is to help bridge the gap for international medical students and graduates to use their diverse, resilient, and unique backgrounds to contribute to an equally diverse, resilient, and unique field of medicine.
