At AAEM/RSA, we proudly honor the exceptional contributions of both students and faculty in the field of emergency medicine. Our awards are divided into two categories: Student Awards and Faculty Awards, each celebrating outstanding individuals who demonstrate leadership, commitment, and a passion for the advancement of emergency medicine.

Our Faculty Awards recognize the commitment and contributions of faculty members who inspire the next generation of emergency physicians. These awards are designed to acknowledge those who have shown leadership, mentorship, and innovation in their work with students and residents.

Committee Member of the Year Award

This award honors AAEM/RSA committee members who have made exceptional contributions to their respective committees. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Have served on an AAEM/RSA committee for at least one full year
  • Be nominated by a member of the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors or an AAEM/RSA Committee Chair
  • Have demonstrated significant contributions that go above and beyond expectations
Faculty Mentor of the Year Award

Award Criteria
he AAEM/RSA Faculty Mentor of the Year Award aims to recognize an attending physician in emergency medicine who has served as an exceptional role model for medical students, residents, and/or fellows.

Eligibility
Any attending physician in emergency medicine who is a current member of AAEM is eligible for nomination.

Selection Criteria
Nominees will be evaluated based on the impact of their mentorship on the academic and professional success of medical students, residents, and fellows. Final recommendations will be made by the AAEM/RSA Membership & Awards Committee, with the AAEM/RSA Executive Committee making the final determination.

Award
The recipient will receive a commemorative plaque and will be recognized in AAEM/RSA publications as well as at the annual AAEM Scientific Assembly.

Kevin Rodgers Program Director of the Year Award

This award honors an emergency medicine program director who has made exceptional contributions to both the field of emergency medicine and AAEM. Named in memory of Dr. Kevin Rodgers, a revered leader, educator, and mentor, this award recognizes a program director who exemplifies the dedication and passion for advancing emergency medicine education that Dr. Rodgers embodied.

Nominees must demonstrate excellence in their role as a program director, fostering the development of future emergency physicians, and advocating for the values upheld by AAEM, including integrity, transparency, and a commitment to high-quality patient care. In addition to their contributions within their program, nominees should also have a significant impact on AAEM and the broader emergency medicine community.

Eligible nominees must be current members of AAEM and actively engaged in the professional growth and mentorship of residents and students. The recipient will be recognized for their leadership, innovation, and dedication to preparing the next generation of emergency physicians.

Program Coordinator of the Year Award

This award honors an emergency medicine program coordinator who has made exceptional contributions to both the field of emergency medicine and AAEM.

Regional Faculty Mentor Award

Award Criteria
The AAEM/RSA Regional Faculty Mentor Award recognizes an attending emergency medicine faculty member who has served as an exceptional role model for medical students, residents, and/or fellows within their region.

Eligibility
Any attending physician in emergency medicine who is a current member of AAEM is eligible.

Selection Criteria
Nominees will be evaluated based on the impact of their mentorship on the academic and professional success of medical students, residents, and fellows in their region.

Regions

  • Region 1: Northeast – CT, D.C., DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT

Our Student Awards recognize the dedication and achievements of medical students involved in emergency medicine. These awards highlight leadership, academic excellence, and community engagement. We encourage nominations for the following awards:

AAEM/RSA International and Regional EMIG of the Year Awards

AAEM/RSA recognizes the invaluable contributions that emergency medicine interest groups (EMIGs) provide to medical students pursuing a career in emergency medicine. EMIGs play a critical role in fostering interest in the specialty, guiding students through the residency application process, offering educational resources, and providing opportunities for networking with peers. EMIGs also enhance out-of-class activities through events, skill sessions, and much more. 

Purpose
The AAEM/RSA EMIG of the Year Award honors outstanding EMIGs at both the international and regional levels, as well as the dedicated student leaders who work tirelessly to create valuable opportunities for their members.

Regional EMIG Awards
Each year, a maximum of two EMIGs per region will be selected:

  • Regional EMIG of the Year 
  • Regional First Runner Up

Regional Breakdown:

  • Region 1: Northeast – CT, D.C., DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT
  • Region 2: South – AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, OK, P.R., SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV
  • Region 3: Midwest – IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, and WI
  • Region 4: West – AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, WA, and WY
  • Region 5: International – All other international medical schools

From the 10 selected regional EMIGs, up to three will be further recognized at the national level:

  • National EMIG of the Year 
  • First runner-up
  • Second runner-up

International EMIG Award
Each year, a maximum of two International EMIGs will be selected:

  • International EMIG of the Year 
  • International First Runner Up

Prize
Recipients of the AAEM/RSA International and Regional EMIG of the Year Awards will receive the following:

  • Recognition in Common Sense and on the AAEM/RSA website
  • A membership box for all EMIG members
  • A commemorative plaque

Eligibility
Any EMIG associated with an LCME-accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school, as well as any EMIG from an international medical school, is eligible to apply for the AAEM/RSA International or Regional EMIG of the Year Awards.

Criteria
Award recipients will be evaluated based on the overall quality of their application and the accomplishments of their members, with particular emphasis on the following (but not limited to):

  • Total number of AAEM/RSA members in the EMIG
  • Quality and quantity of EMIG-hosted events
  • AAEM/RSA or emergency medicine-related publications and presentations by EMIG members
  • Regional and national impact of EMIG events and leadership

Application Timeline & Selection Process
All EMIG activities from July 1 to June 30 of the year will be considered. The application deadline is October 31, with awards announced by December 15 to ensure recognition prior to ERAS submissions. Final recommendations will be made by the AAEM/RSA Membership & Awards Committee, in collaboration with the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council leadership, with final decisions approved by the AAEM/RSA Executive Committee.

National Medical Student of the Year Scholarship Award

Scholarship Criteria
The AAEM/RSA National Medical Student of the Year Scholarship recognizes one fourth-year, EM-bound medical student who demonstrates exceptional dedication to the field of emergency medicine through leadership, advocacy, research, and academic excellence.

Eligibility
Nominees must be fourth-year medical students who meet the following criteria:

  • A current, paid member of AAEM/RSA at the time of nomination
  • In good standing at a U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school
  • Applying for a position in emergency medicine through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) or the military match

Application Process
Applicants must submit the following:

  • Letters of endorsement from the EM chair, program director, clerkship director, or emergency medicine faculty
  • Documentation of leadership in medical organizations and the community, research/publications, awards, and academic excellence
  • Personal CV of the nominated medical student

Selection Criteria
Candidates will be evaluated based on leadership and service within emergency medicine and the community, advocacy for policy issues relevant to the specialty, research/publications, and academic excellence. Final recommendations will be made by the AAEM/RSA Membership & Awards Committee, with recipients approved by the AAEM/RSA Executive Committee.

Scholarship Award
The national recipient will receive:

  • A $500 monetary prize
  • Recognition in AAEM/RSA publications
  • Complimentary attendance and formal recognition at the AAEM Scientific Assembly
  • An award plaque
Regional Medical Student of the Year Scholarship Award

Scholarship Criteria
The AAEM/RSA Regional Medical Student of the Year Scholarships recognize one fourth-year, EM-bound medical student from each region who demonstrates exceptional dedication to the field of emergency medicine through leadership, advocacy, research, and academic excellence.

Eligibility
Nominees must be fourth-year medical students who meet the following criteria:
