September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10, 2017 is World Suicide Prevention Day. In an effort to raise awareness on this day and throughout the month of September, the AAEM Resident and Student Association (RSA) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) have been hard at work planning a number of campaign activities. See below to learn more about what RSA and AAEM are doing and how you can get involved too!

Public Service Announcements

RSA and CORD have collaborated on two new PSAs. Throughout the month of September, you will see videos of Christopher I. Doty, MD FAAEM sharing his story and a collaboration with the National Suicide Prevention LifelineMental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC), and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention(AFSP).

#BeThe1To

RSA and AAEM have also partnered with the #BeThe1To campaign. #BeThe1To is a campaign organized by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Mental Health Association of New York City. AAEM has partnered with RSA and 5 other emergency medicine organizations to customize this campaign for emergency physicians. The other partner organizations include:

  • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
  • American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP)
  • Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD)
  • Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA)
  • Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)

Take 5 to Save Lives

RSA has partnered with the Take 5 to Save Lives campaign. The five steps identified by the National Council for Suicide Prevention (NCSP) are:

  1. Learn the signs
  2. Do your part
  3. Practice self-care
  4. Reach out
  5. Spread the word

Twitter Takeover

Throughout the week of September 4th, RSA will be filling up Twitter with words of encouragement and help to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Each day will correspond with one of the Take 5 steps. Follow RSA or #WSPD17 on Twitter and stay up-to-date!
